South Middle School Open, Ready To Welcome Braintree Students
School officials said the new South Middle School will consist of three main parts. The first section will include a dining room/auditorium, media commons, two innovation labs with computers and a band room.
The second part of the school will consist of two two-story sections, organized by grade. This is where classrooms will be, with grades seven and eight in one and the lower grades in another.
The third part of the building is the athletic wing and will include two gymnasiums, one with bleachers and one without. In the middle will be a courtyard with three seating areas designed to allow teachers to take a classroom outside.

Braintree parents face possibility of elementary school redistricting
Moving Monatiquot and high school programs to the present South building would not result in much of a savings for the system, said School Superintendent James Lee. The building, which soon will be replaced by a new South Middle School, would require $183,000 of work to retrofit it for younger students and for asbestos abatement. About $70,000 would be saved by the move.
Many of the comments from the public on the plan dealt with the proposed district changes at the elementary and middle schools. They called on the mayor to use some of the town's $8.5 million in free cash to fully fund the school system, which received less than a 1% budget increase for the current school year and lost 16 staff positions the prior year.
